Meyers Chuck sits on the tip of Cleveland Peninsula, separated from Prince of Wales by Clarence Strait. The village has a year-round population of about twenty residents and is only accessible by boat or float plane. The natural well protected harbor has long been shelter for fishing boats caught in the stormy waters of Clarence Strait. White settlers began living year-round at Meyers Chuck by the late 1800's. "Chuck" is a Chinook jargon word applied to a saltwater body that fills at high tide. In it's heyday, around 1922, the town sported a post office, store, machine shop, barber shop, bakery and bar developed to support residents. By 1939, 107 residents lived in Meyers Chuck. When fish runs began to decline in the 1940's, many people left the community to join the armed forces or to work at war-time production jobs in the Lower 48. The Chuck has no stores or roads and beachfront homes are connected by a series of winding paths. It does have a community dock which has become a popular spot for summer boat traffic heading up the Inside Passage. Meyers Chuck has also become known for it's village art gallery which features locally-made artwork including cedar baskets, wood carving and stained glass.
